Inlays & Onlays

Why Might I Need an Inlay or Onlay?

Inlays and onlays are large porcelain fillings that are used to repair the chewing surfaces of back teeth. We will suggest you have an inlay or onlay if one of your back teeth has a larger cavity that cannot be filled with conventional tooth coloured composite resin. The porcelain used to make inlays and onlays is extremely strong and will repair the tooth, restoring its strength and structure and protecting it from further damage.

What is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?

An inlay repairs the inner part of the flat surface of a molar or premolar (the large teeth used for chewing), but an onlay will repair this area and one or more of the raised points or cusps. The tooth cusps are the higher points on the edges nearest to your cheeks and tongue.
