Fissure Sealants

Why Might My Child Need Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These surfaces can often become decayed due to the way they develop, with many deep grooves and fissures that are difficult to thoroughly brush. Bacteria and food trapped in these fissures can cause cavities, but applying fissure sealants protects these surfaces.

What are Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants are a very thin layer of plastic that is fluid enough to cover the clean tooth surfaces. The plastic hardens naturally or we may accelerate this process with a special light. The sealant creates a smooth and easy to clean surface by completely filling in all the grooves in the tooth, but it is thin enough not to interfere with the bite. Afterwards, the teeth can be used normally and the sealant is virtually invisible.

How Long Do They Last?

Fissure sealants can last for many years, but we can renew them if they begin to look chipped or worn. They are a great way to protect these tooth surfaces and we suggest applying them soon after the adult teeth erupt as they can only be used on teeth that do not have any fillings.
