Looking After Children’s Teeth

A daily oral care routine is vital to maintaining healthy teeth and gums in adults and in children. Even the busiest person can spare the few minutes required each day. No matter how rushed or tired you feel, please don’t skip twice daily brushing for at least two minutes each time and daily flossing.

Brush teeth using a soft-bristled toothbrush, with a head small enough to reach right to the back of the mouth. Hold a toothbrush at a 45° angle to the gumline for the bristles to reach right down to and to just below your gums, ensuring they remove the maximum amount of plaque and food. Daily flossing is essential for removing food and plaque trapped in between your teeth, where your toothbrush bristles cannot reach.

One thing that can help tremendously is to ensure your child receives tooth sealants, which are best applied when their adult back teeth first erupt. Tooth sealants consist of a very thin layer of flowable composite resin that is painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth, sealing these surfaces and providing durable protection against tooth decay. Treatment is quick, painless and non-invasive, and it is very effective.
