Why Do Kids Need Braces?

Kids may need braces to treat Malocclusion. It is a fancy term for everything related to crooked, overlapping, overcrowded teeth or simply having a bad bite. But what causes a bad bite? Often times it is hereditary but it can also be due to simple childhood habits. If you notice the following with your child, it might be beneficial to get an early assessment at Lakeside Dental Spa:Invisalign - Before & After

  • Thumb sucking
  • Mouth breathing
  • Grinding or clenching of teeth
  • Not being able to comfortably close lips
  • Difficulty in chewing
  • Speech difficulties
  • Jaws that are protruded or recessed
  • Early or late loss of baby teeth

Kids can start orthodontics at any age but there is an optimal period for them to begin the treatment. Ideally, they should have an orthodontic evaluation at age 7. At this age, your child’s adult molars are beginning to erupt. This enables us to evaluate their bite and verify if there are any problems with malocclusion.

Starting early orthodontic treatment doesn't mean that your child will immediately get braces. It just means that we will be able to evaluate and prevent more problems and determine the best time to start treatment if needed.
