Why Do Teens Need Braces?

Similar to kids, orthodontics for teens is needed to treat a malocclusion. However, with teens, there is so much more questions running through their mind about how this affects them socially.

What Types of Orthodontic Treatment Are Suitable For Teens?

Children Ortho Before & After

Here are the standard types of braces we recommend for teens:

  1. Metal Braces

With metal braces, your teeth are held together using metal brackets & wires. You may be concerned about how you’ll look like, modern metal braces are significantly smaller and less obvious than the traditional ones. They are the least expensive braces option.

  1. Ceramic Braces

This type is more discreet than metal braces. They are the same size and shape as the metal braces. However, for ceramic braces, the brackets blend naturally with your tooth colour.

  1. Invisalign Treatment

This may seem to be the most comfortable option but it is only for mild cases of tooth alignment. It is clear and removable, so eating is way easier but the aligner needs to be replaced every couple of weeks.

With your orthodontic consultation, we will assess each case and verify the best option that suits you.

Can I Continue my Hobbies?

It doesn’t matter what type of orthodontic treatment you decide on, it should never get in the way of your teen living their life. Sports are still safe to do with braces, you just need to wear a new mouthguard fitted considering the new appliance. Teens who love to play musical instruments such as flute or trumpet may find it difficult at first but it only takes a bit of time to get used to your new appliance.

Will Braces Affect my Diet?

With braces, it is important to avoid hard and crunchy food that can break the braces off your teeth. Biting into an apple, whole carrots, steak, or even crusty bread may not be ideal. It doesn’t mean you will never be able to eat it again; you can slice it into smaller pieces and chew carefully on the back of the teeth. For removable Invisalign clear aligners such, there are no restrictions on what you want to eat.
